Kimberley BC

Just over a century ago, the place where the town of Kimberley now stands was a remote location where few human footsteps had fallen. With the exception of small groups of natives who lived and hunted in the area, the region was almost wholly unpopulated and entirely unexplored. It’s breathtaking beauty, agreeable weather and abundant natural attractions might have remained secret for much longer had it not been for the curiosity of a few prospectors whose intuition suggested there was even more to the area than met the eye.

The Sullivan Mine was one of many claims in the Kootenay region at the time, but it is undoubtedly the most significant. Founded in 1892, Sullivan mine was in full operation until December 2001 – a remarkable 109 years. Its economic and social impact on the area was immense, single-handedly turning a quiet little mining encampment into the thriving town of Kimberley.

The spirit of Kimberley is as rich as its history. You’d be hard pressed to find another town anywhere that is more welcoming, beautiful, or filled with more exciting possibilities. The gold rush may have brought throngs of people to the Kootenays, but the fabulous weather and inviting terrain is almost certainly what made them stay. There simply isn’t a more beautiful place to greet each day, or an environment that encourages more adventure.

Resort developments are now in the process of turning this once sleepy little ski hill into a winter wonderland. More runs, faster lifts, and a plethora of on-hill attractions give downhill disciples even more cause to celebrate the first snowfall. Skating, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and sleigh rides are other ways to enjoy Kimberley’s powder-filled days.

When the snow melts and ice fields turn into rolling green meadows, nature serves up a brand new set of challenges. Hop on a bike and explore the vase terrain. Rock climb. Ride horseback. Pack a picnic lunch and travel as far as your feet will carry you. Find a quiet spot along a stream and catch your dinner. Or practice your swing at one of the award winning golf courses nearby. Trickle Creek Golf Resort is a fifteen minute walk from your home, while St. Eugene and Bootleg Gap (all Les Furber designed) are a short drive away.

There are fewer hours of daylight than there are ways to fill them.
